losing weight

blogger's warning: lots of pictures of myself to download. for good reason, though.

i guess there's really no other way to put it. i've finally lost weight. like how some people used to describe me as "dark, fat, and funny", i am now simply "dark, and funny". hehe.

beginning around two and a half years ago, i think i unconsciously decided to stack as much food into my body every meal time. this period saw my rise from a not-so-thin-but-not-fat person into this dark-pig-na-naka-glasses guy who treated fast food joints as temples. it was the time when i ate a minimum of dalawang ulam, two cups of rice, soup, and a drink every meal at the canteen. it was the time when i would order a plate of putanesca and carbonara at dummie's. or a barbecue chicken meal and stuffed pizza at brother's. or one western bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a drink at carl's jr. or sizzling liempo with extra rice and extra egg at sizzling. although nothing, and i mean NOTHING, would beat my ultimate mcdonald's meal: two-piece chicken, extra rice, extra gravy, quarter pounder with cheese, mcspaghetti, large fries, iced tea. heaven.

ok tama na, nagugutom na tuloy ako.

here's how i looked around that time:

however, things changed ever since i graduated and ever since i started earning my own money. believe it or not, i had been thinking of losing weight for a long time running during the last years of college but i simply never had the time since i had too much extra-curriculars and my thesis to attend to. plus, my parents refused to pay for my gym and my daily allowance couldn't cover the monthly dues.

so, when i got my first paycheck last november 30, my first big purchase was... gym membership! i enrolled myself in this gym near my house where the elorde boxing gym in las piƱas is also at. this was around the first week of december.

tuloy-tuloy na ‘yun after that.

i would do boxing four to five times a week during my first two months, usually after work (which is in the morning). boxing training sessions, up to now, serve as my cardio work-out since i think it’s simply more effective and better in every way. first of all, it’s not as boring as the treadmill. next, you get to learn a new skill. third, you get to develop resistance and stamina. and lastly, it’s a very enjoyable and quick cardio work-out.

i also decided, last december, to start dieting. yes, diet. apparently, the word is in my vocabulary. and by the way, dieting during december, the month of endless food in the fridge, is no joke. i didn’t go on a serious one with names like south beach and atkins though. i simply lessened the portions i ate, halving my meals during the first month. i still ate things like pork, beef, etc. but less of them and more of other greenier things.

slowly but surely, it became apparent to me that it would only a matter of time until i really lost weight.

to top of the cake, i also began jogging a lot around the village. i love jogging. i jog during the sunrise and it’s really ironic to note that even though you’re panting and sweating, there’s something very relaxing about jogging with that beautiful sunrise to keep you company.

oh yeah, contrary to speculations, i did all of this without any... uhmm... "substances". hindi po ako nag drugs or nag bangkok pills o kung anu-anong mga weight loss supplement meron dyan. the only supplements i take are multivitamins and a fiber supplement (all of which i’ve been taking ever since before).

so all these things i did continuously starting december and up to now. the results are simply marvelous. i’ve officially lost around 35 pounds to date in a span of just three to four months. my waistline also shrank from a 38 to a 32. and bone structures i never knew i had started revealing themselves in my body. if my computations are correct, i lost 20% of my body weight ever since i started.

i still continue going to the gym but i’ve sort of lessened my boxing training to just two to three times a week and i’ve also started to take lifting weights more seriously now. i also still practice portions during meal time -- eating little meals but five times a day, just to keep me from getting hungry. i also still make it a point to jog with the sunrise.

if you ask me if it was difficult to lose this much weight in a relatively short period of time, i honestly would say no. it’s not difficult. but it’s all about the mindset. when i started out, i never thought “oh man, this is gonna be hard” or “fuck dieting! i want my chickenjoy!”. like what i said, i honestly believed that it would only be a matter of time. that i could really do this whole losing weight thing.

well, there you go. i’m now currently dealing with the problems after losing weight such as clothes. i’ve spent a few thousand pesos as it is having my clothes altered because if i didn’t, i would probably look like this pa hip-hop kind of guy with loose pants and gigantic shirts – which is definitely not my style. i’m also planning a visit to my “contacts” in divisoria in an attempt to get smaller sized shirts by the bulk, among other things.

hopefully lang talaga i wouldn’t just suddenly stop and begin eating like a pig again. the challenge right now is fighting complacency and to continue to maintain such a weight. so is this weight loss of mine just a fluke or is it here stay? hmm, honestly i don’t know. we shall see.
